President Pranab Mukherjee will be the chief guest and Governor BL Joshi will be the guest of honour at the celebration of the 45th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur on Friday.
The President will be giving away medals to the meritorious students and will deliver convocation address on the occasion.
This year the President's gold medal and the Director's gold medal have been bagged by Shubham Tulsiani of Computer Science and Engineering department. This is a rare occasion for the second time in the institute's history that two prestigious gold medals are being given to one student. He will also be getting Departmental award.
This bright student has scored 9.9 CPI (cumulative performance index) out of 10. Shubham has been adjudged as the best academic performer in the graduating class in all the disciplines of BTech and MSc (5-year Integrated) degree programme and all-round performer with excellent organisational abilities and leadership qualities in the graduating class in all disciplines of undergraduate programmes of study.
Addressing the media, Prof M Anandkrishnan, chairman, Board of Governors, IIT-Kanpur informed that this year the institute will be awarding DSc (Honoris Causa) to Professor Ashoke Sen, Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad and NR Narayana Murthy, executive chairman of Infosys Limited. The two will be getting their awards from the President. He added that this was for the first time that two alumni of IIT-Kanpur were being awarded DSc.
He further said a number of celebrities from academic, administration and industry along with the students receiving the degrees and their parents and guardians among other guests will be present on the occasion.
Prof Indranil Manna, director, IIT-K informed that it was for the second time in the history of IIT-Kanpur that President was coming to participate in the convocation ceremony of the institute.
He said a total of 1,327 students including 99 girls will be awarded degrees during the convocation. Also, 132 PhD scholars will be awarded degrees, 411 students of M Tech and 359 students of B Tech will be awarded the degrees. He further said that 74% of the total number of students getting their degrees were in post-graduate category.
He further added that Pranjal Saxena of Chemical Engineering department will be given Ratan Swarup Memorial prize for outstanding all-round performance and excellent organisational abilities and leadership qualities.
Another student Karthick of Aerospace Engineering will be awarded Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma medal for outstanding all-round graduating M Tech/Phd student for general proficiency including character and conduct, extra-curricular activities and social service.
In addition to this, 24 students will be awarded general proficiency medals for the best academic performance in various disciplines. Cadence gold medal for best M Tech Thesis will be awarded to Tanmoy Chatterjee of Mechanical Engineering. This year Gopal Das Bhandari Memorial Distinguished Teacher award will be awarded to Dr Aditya K Jagannatham of Electrical Engineering.
While interacting with mediapersons on the eve of convocation, Prof Indranil Manna said IIT-Kanpur was committed towards becoming world class institute. "We are in pro-active role in entering into research collaborations with the foreign universities. The faculties of the US universities are very keen in entering into research collaboration with us," said Prof Manna.
When questioned as to why IITs, including IIT-Kanpur, were not among the top 100 institutes/universities of the world, Prof Manna replied that the IITs were founded with the vision of producing engineers for the country but now the scenario has changed. IIT-K Has produced enough engineers now it was on a different platform where the challenge was to dole out new researchers and technologies.
Prof Anandkrishnan said for an institute to become world class, it was important that the renowned foreign faculties including noble laureates take classes there and also the teacher-student ratio was taken into consideration for the institute to be in the top list.
Prof Dheeraj Sanghi, dean, academic affairs, IIT-K said the convocation ceremony has been divided into three parts. In the first part, President will be giving medals to the best students, in the second part, NR Narayana Murthy will be heading the session and the PG students will be given degrees. And in the third and the last part, UG students will be awarded degrees and Prof Ashoke Sen will address the gathering.
He added that a total of 88 awards will be given at the ceremony.
