Yesterday HRD Minister M.M. Pallam Raju held a meeting with experts to understand strategy behind top 20 percentile calculation and normalisation of XII Marks that was used to give 40% weightage in JEE Main.
This meeting was held after many complaints logged by students/parents who suffered a lot due to flaws in percentile calculation.
After the meeting Raju said, “Immediately after the class XII board results came out state boards calculated percentile by factoring in total number of students who appeared in the board examination. But CBSE calculated percentile on the basis of students who passed class XII examination.”
This discrepancy has occurred in many state boards who declared percentile calculation in hurry but situation is worst in Andhra Pradesh, which is also the home state of HRD Minister Pallam Raju. Earlier state board declared 89.8% as the cut off marks to come under top 20 percentile, but after CBSE calculation cut off marks increased to 91.8%, which is very high.
This year 79 students have already been denied admission to IITs even after getting initial offers due to this mismatch in percentile calculation.
RaJu agreed that there are some discrepancies but he denied to announce any decision that time. He said, “The present system was adopted as per the wisdom of the IIT council and it’s for them to see what’s fair and what’s not.” Already, the Andhra Pradesh government has lodged a strong protest with the HRD ministry. “The matter is pending in the Supreme Court but ministry can still intervene,” a source said.
