Getting a seat in Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT) is no more a matter of pride for students, it seems. Of the total 160 seats in BTech course in IIT-BBS, 148 students have registered during the first round of admission this year. Sources said the reasons for not joining the prestigious institute are 'lack of infrastructure' and 'not getting preferred subjects'.
"The 148 students' certificate verification will be done on Monday and Tuesday. Besides, some students will take admission in preparatory course - a bridge course to admit quota students," said registrar of IIT-BBS B K Ray.
He further said, "We have got students within ranks between 3,000 and 5,000 of the total cut-off of 10,000, which indicated that IIT-BBS is preferred by high-rankers."
According to sources, 25 seats were vacant in 2008-09, 11 in 2009-10 while there were no takers for eight and seven seats in 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic sessions. There was no vacancy in 2010-11. IIT-BBS has been offering BTech course in subjects like civil, electrical, mechanical and computer science engineering having 40 seats each.
