BHU to organise annual sports festival at IIT Gymkhana

The annual sports festival of Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, 'Spardha 2013', is going to start at IIT Gymkhana, BHU from Friday.

Detailing the reporters about the highlights of the four-day festival on Thursday, IIT Gymkhana, chief councilor, Prof SK Sharma, informed that as many as 1,120 participants from different colleges, universities and technical institutions will be taking part in various sports like taekwondo, karate, cricket, football, volleyball. Former captain of National Hockey team of India, Padmashree Mohammad Shahid will be inaugurating the festival.

Interestingly, this year a unique mini football match on a 25 by 25 feet court, will be played in the Spardha 2013. According to general secretary, Games and Sports Council, IIT-BHU, Sagar Barua, the match will be held on the call of the noted football player Dider Drogbar who is on his mission to popularize football.

Other highlights of the sports festival will be a mixed cricket match with both female and male students. According to Barua, as many as 900 male participants and 180 female participants with 40 coaches and managers will be arriving for the festival. While no IITs are taking part in this year's sports festival, technical institutions like NIT Allahabad, NIT Surat, NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Jamshedpur will be present on the occasion. The festival will culminate on February 25.
