Young scientist of India-17 year old Rashmi Parvathi K found ways to produce salt from coconut palm petiole

Reportedly four Indian students have made outstanding science projects, one of them is a 17 year old Rashmi Parvathi K whose project on antimicrobial salt is set to land her in Houston. She is all set to fly to US.


Rashmi, daughter of farmer Ravishankar K belongs to Puttur (Daksina Kannada district). She has found out ways to produce salt from coconut palm petiole which has medicinal values. The project titled ‘Salt from Coconut Palm Petiole – a remedy for skin ailments’ and is made under the guidance of Shankara Bhat Badanaje. Earlier, Rashmi secured gold medal and first grand award at the Indian Science and Engineering Fair – Puttur micro fair recently. “The project was selected for a national competition and then she qualified for the international event,” said Ravishankar.
Rashmi Parvathi, who bagged the second rank in SSLC, had earlier won national accolades by producing antidandruff shampoo using herbs. She presented five science projects at the IRIS national competitions in the past three years. She has attended several science camps and bagged nearly a dozen national and state awards, he said.
Keeping the details of the project hidden, Parvathi said, “My ambition is to become a scientist.” She is a science student at Vivekananda PU College and also a Carnatic singer.
