Nestled in the rural hinterland of the cereal bowl of India, the first IIT of Punjab will hold its maiden convocation on Saturday. Ninety-six students of the graduating class of 2008-12 will receive their degrees at a function to be held in the present transit campus on Nangal Road in Ropar. Out of them, 73 students landed lucrative offers at leading multinational companies in India and seven at companies abroad.
The ceremony will be presided by eminent space scientist Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, who is also member (science), Planning Commission, and T Ramasami, secretary, department of science and technology. The convocation will be streamed live by the IIT.
With more than 500 students in BTech and PhD, the institute that began in 2008 has had a rollercoaster ride. It had recently tied up with PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research), Chandigarh, to pursue research in mechanism of bone fraction and healing and to develop prosthetic device.
To address the technology gap between research labs and commercial products, the institute had recently launched prototype development and innovation fund (PDIF) with support from Punjab technical university (PTU). PDIF aims to foster innovation within industry, academia, and government bodies by engaging students, faculty and industry to work on industrial and societal concerns that are critical to the world around us.
However, the institute reportedly even had its share of problems that ranged from even facing a staff shortage with as many as 45 faculty posts lying vacant at one time. Five years after it came into existence, the institute, with an estimate number of 500-odd students, functions out of a defunct women's polytechnic, converted into a transit campus. It soon will get a building of its own in the near future.
