CCTVs to keep tabs on Madras IIT hostels

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has decided to instal CCTV cameras in hostels to enhance students’ safety and regulate usage of Internet to avoid students watching objectionable websites.

Prof L.S. Ganesh, dean (students), IIT-M, in an informal chat with Deccan Chronicle, said the institute had received a couple of complaints from students about their theft of cellphone and laptops, which made the administration to fix CCTV cameras.

“Some students had filed complaints with us that their cellphones and laptops went missing from their hostel room. On enquiry, we came to know that these students had kept their hostel room open when they were away, which paved the way for theft,” he said.

This issue was discussed at the hostel wardens’ meeting on Tuesday and it was decided that CCTV cameras would be fixed at vantage points in all 15 hostels to nab the culprits.

“We had already advised students to lock the doors when they leave their rooms, but some students still fail to do so. As far as campus security is concerned, we have stepped up patrolling and safety mechanisms to ensure utmost safety on our campus,” he said.

Turning his attention towards cyber security, Prof Ganesh said as per the Union government’s policy, the institute would monitor Internet traffic to identify use of objectionable websites. “If we find a student browsing some objectionable website, we will call him to sensitise him about the existing cyber laws and their implications,” he informed.
