PEC adds 30 seats for 'comp wizards'

With Computer Science Engineering (CSE) being the priority of majority toppers in All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE), the number of seats in the coveted CSE at PEC University of Technology has been doubled to 60 from the new academic session starting this July.

"We are working on a lot of changes including new courses in the IT department. From this year CSE stream will have 60 seats instead of 30," said Sanjeev Sofat, professor and dean academics, PEC University. The Joint Admissions Committee (JAC), comprising of six educational institutes, including top engineering colleges - PEC and University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), and others like Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology, SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET), Chandigarh College or Architecture ( CCA), conduct the admission process.

Introduction of new courses in the IT department of PEC is also underway and are likely to start from the next academic session. However, for better market prospects of the IT students a merger was being considered for the IT department earlier at PEC. "This is a dynamic process. Decisions will be taken in the best interests of the students," added Sofat. Even as the PEC officials continue to remain tight lipped on the merger of IT and CSE departments, the nationwide developments in other top engineering colleges are sure to affect the decisions of local colleges.

Done on rotation basis by different colleges, for the second time this year UIET will be conducting the joint admission process of these colleges in Chandigarh, affiliated to Panjab University and PEC University.
