Eligible for NITs with just 9% score in entrance exam

This year central board of secondary education conducted JEE Main entrance examination and has fixed cut off for all categories as shown below.

JEE Main cut off Marks
Categorycut off Marks
General62/360 (17.22%)
OBC59/360 (16.38%)
SC/ST32/360 (8.88%)

As you can see that there is huge difference between cut off marks of category student and general student, a category student need to score only 8.88% marks to qualify entrance examination.
The final score is calculated by giving a 60 per cent weightage to a student’s JEE Main marks and 40 per cent weightage to his or her board marks. The XII board marks are normalised through a percentile-based calculation to get around the problem of wide variations in evaluation among school boards.
An individual’s percentile is calculated by dividing the number of examinees below him or her by the total number of candidates. The result is then multiplied by 100.
The CBSE official said, such a low cut off was set to ensure a large pool of candidates.
